In the middle ages, people would pin the name of their sweetheart to their sleeve on Valentine's Day and keep it there for a week, hence 'wearing their heart on their sleeve'.
Since the Middle Ages, Saint Valentine’s Day has been celebrated with a variety of customs associated with romantic love. Today the most common tradition is to give loved ones flowers, candy, gifts, or cards. The Valentine’s Day card shown here dates to 1909.
